Memorial monument to be dedicated
A service will be held Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. to dedicate a memorial monument in memory of those buried in St. Matthews Lutheran Church Cemetery from 1903-1918. Philip Johnson will also speak.
Most of the markers for these graves were destroyed by the 1918 fires. Records that had been taken home for safekeeping were burned by the fire, which came within inches of the church. The monument and four markers designate this area of unmarked graves.
The Cemetery Committee would like any names of those known or thought to be buried in the cemetery from 1903-1918, including fire victims.
St. Matthews Lutheran Church Cemetery is located at North Cloquet Road West and Church Avenue, Esko. Coffee and refreshments will follow the service at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 4 Elizabeth Ave.
